Bernard Cornwell – “Sharpe’s Rifles”

Publ: 1988 ISBN:-9780140294293
Rating: *** 3 stars

Sharpe's Rifles: Richard Sharpe and the French Invasion of Galicia, January, 1809 . It's 1809, and Napoleon's army is sweeping across Spain. Lieutenant Richard Sharpe is newly in command of the demoralized, distrustful men of the 95th Rifles. He must lead them to safety-and the only way of escape is a treacherous trek through the enemy-infested mountains of Spain.
Oops. The problem with writing a chronological series out of sequence is that you get the odd glaring error. This was written in 1988 whereas the two which precede it chronologically were written a lot later - Sharpe's Trafalgar: Richard Sharpe and the Battle of Trafalgar, 21 October 1805 (in 2000) and Sharpe's Prey: Richard Sharpe and the Expedition to Copenhagen, 1807 (in 2001). As a result there is a comment in Sharpe’s Rifles that ‘forgets’ what had happened to Sharpe in earlier years (because it hadn’t happened yet!!!) . That apart I thoroughly enjoyed this, my latest in the sequence which I am reading as fast as the library can get hold of them for me.
